ABB Motors and Drives to Support Kawasaki Hydrogen Development

ABB Powering Kawasaki’s Hydrogen Innovation with High-Efficiency Motors and Drives

Japan is accelerating its journey toward a carbon-neutral society by 2050. To support this goal, ABB recently partnered with Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI). ABB will supply megawatt-class motors and Variable Speed Drives (VSD) for KHI’s hydrogen testing facility. Located in Harima Town, this facility focuses on developing next-generation energy technologies. This collaboration represents a critical step in Japan's strategy to utilize hydrogen as a sustainable energy source.

Optimizing Hydrogen Compression via Precision Motion Control

Hydrogen is an extremely light gas that requires significant energy to compress for transport. Consequently, high-speed centrifugal compressors must operate with maximum efficiency. ABB’s drive technology provides precise torque and speed control to optimize motor performance. These systems smooth out power fluctuations from intermittent renewable sources like solar or wind. By utilizing these advanced motor-driven solutions, KHI can effectively scale its centrifugal hydrogen compressor (KM Comp-H2) for large-scale pipelines.

Bridging the Gap from Research to Commercialization

The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) commissioned this project to KHI. As Japan's largest public R&D management body, NEDO facilitates the transition from lab testing to industrial application. ABB supports this ecosystem by providing a "one-stop solution" for the entire hydrogen value chain. This includes converting renewable energy into electricity and powering the electrolysis process. In addition, ABB’s equipment ensures efficient compression and storage before the hydrogen reaches the end-user.

Strategic Infrastructure for a Sustainable Energy Landscape

Kawasaki Heavy Industries positions energy and environmental solutions as a primary strategic focus under its "Group Vision 2030." The centrifugal compressor plays a vital role in hydrogen liquefaction and transportation. By integrating ABB’s energy-efficient solutions, KHI aims to make hydrogen as accessible as traditional fuels. This shift reduces CO2 emissions and lowers the overall environmental impact of industrial-grade energy distribution. As a result, the Harima Plant serves as a major milestone for global hydrogen society development.

Expert Insight: The Critical Role of Energy Efficiency in Green Hydrogen

Unlocking green hydrogen's potential depends entirely on the efficiency of the conversion and compression stages. From my perspective, the integration of VSDs is not just a technical upgrade; it is an economic necessity. Without precise control, the energy cost of compression can negate the benefits of green energy. ABB’s 140 years of electrical expertise provide the reliability required for 24/7 operation in these high-pressure environments. Therefore, manufacturers who adopt integrated motor-drive solutions will lead the global decarbonization market.

Application Scenarios and Industrial Solutions

  • Large-Scale Pipelines: Utilizing centrifugal compressors to transport high volumes of hydrogen across national energy grids.

  • Liquefaction Terminals: Powering high-speed motors to compress hydrogen into liquid form for international maritime shipping.

  • Renewable Grid Stabilization: Using VSD technology to manage the power intake of electrolyzers when solar and wind production peaks.
