Understanding the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Jie)
The Dragon Boat Festival, known as Duanwu Jie in China, is a traditional holiday with over 2,000 years of history, celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the Chinese lunar calendar.
Cultural Significance and Traditions
The festival primarily commemorates Qu Yuan, a famous patriotic poet and minister of the ancient State of Chu. When his homeland was conquered, he drowned himself in the Miluo River out of deep grief. Local citizens rushed in boats to save him or retrieve his body, which inspired the vibrant tradition of Dragon Boat Racing. To prevent fish from feeding on his body, locals threw bundles of rice into the water, evolving into today's signature festival delicacy: Zongzi (sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves). Today, the festival is a time for family gatherings, wishing for health, safety, and cultural remembrance.
